History :
All this began during my adolescence, as Daddy gave me the
genealogical records my grandfather made in 1941.
Like many Alsace-Moselle residents during World War II, the
occupying forces compelled him to prove his ancestry.
The compulsory documents were birth and marriage
certificate, from the wife to each grandparents, and a
baptismal certificate if there was no special mention of
religion on the above.
I joined the Cercle Genealogique de Moselle-Est in the
1990's, and thanks to the work of Dr. Hein in his records
on Keskastel, I could trace my family up to my forefather
Johannes, born abt. 1663, who was schoemaker (Schumacher)
in Keskastel. Where did he come from ?
What brought him to settle down in this charming village of
the "hunch-backed Elsass" (Krumme Elsass) ? I still don't
know.
There were a few known elements :
* no Schauber in Keskastel in the records of 1600,
* the family history spoke about Switzerland,
* some Schauber went to Herbitzheim, next to Keskastel,
* in 1989, about 55 Schauber listed on Minitel (French
electronic white pages).
I was there in my research, as I came to Internet in july
1996.
Like most of the beginners, one of my first task was to try
the search engines. I typed SCHAUBER in the search window.
What a surprise ! The result was amazing for me : 143 hits
on my surname ! You'll find now much more in the links (on
the left of this page). My research bounced, and my
tracking area came up to 2 continents.
My aim : to connect all the Schauber's genealogical trees,
and find their geographical origin.
You can imagine what follows : records, email,"cousins",
friends.
We are now more than 10 Schauber on the web, and some of
them steady in genealogy. Thanks to all for their
involvement, and specially to Claude.
We are far away from the final target, but let's hope. Our
database counts more than 700 Schauber records, from the
15th century until nowadays. We have some trees, bushes, a
lot of branches, and more growth of leaves...
If you need more information, or if you have SCHAUBER in
your ancestry, thanks to send me an E-Mail. I would be glad hearing from
you...
