SCHAUBER's surname : the origins
Several meanings seem possible.
A no more existing web site, gave for Schaub :
"Schaub is a shortened form of Schauber, which in itself is
a variation of the German occupational name Schauer, the
name given the official inspector -- of a market, for
example, from the Middle High German schouwer > schouwen
= to look, inspect. Other variations are Schauert, Schauber
."
Nevertheless, the most probable meaning refers to the
Germanic names given to thatch : Schaub , Schoup.
According to "the American Heritage Dictionary" : thatch :
plant stalks or foliage, as reeds or palm fronds, used for
roofing.
Then a Schauber could have been the one earning thatch or
covering roofs. It would be a "Thatcher". Hope I won't find
any Margaret ;o) .
